Vesper Lynd: Martini?
Evelyn Tremble: What about them?
Overview: An army of James Bonds joins battle with SMERSH. This spoof is a confusing, largely unfunny mess, despite a cast that includes Peter Sellers, David Niven, Woody Allen and Orson Welles (as well as 007 veterans Ursula Andress, Vladek Sheybal, Caroline Munro and Burt Kwouk). Like the 1954 television adaptation, drink totals from this version of Casino Royale will not count on the big board.
What does Bond drink? To maintain some sense of logic, we will count only two of the characters as authentic 007s: Sir James Bond (played by Niven), and Evelyn Tremble/James Bond (played by Sellers):
- During Sir James Bonds stay at the McTarry estate in Scotland, the whisky flows freely. (Lady Fiona remarks that it brings Fire to the blood.) During dinner, Bond has a glass of the liquor. Later, after everyone else in the castle has passed out, 007 takes a decanter of whisky and a glass with him as he heads for his room. He later drinks a glass of whisky in bed.
- When Bond arrives at secret service headquarters, he opens a bar tray hidden behind a picture, and remarks to Miss Moneypenny that hes partial to jasmine tea. (Niven plays Bond as a model of temperance and restraint.)
- When Evelyn Tremble visits Vesper Lynds flat, she offers him a martini. After she gets the cocktails from a nearby serving tray, they both clink glasses and drink.
- When Tremble (who is now James Bond) arrives at his hotel, he is greeted by Miss Goodthighs, who holds a bottle of champagne and a glass. After he shoots the cork from the bottle, she pours him a glass. Later, as they kiss, she places a knockout drug in his glass. Bond places an antidote pill in the glass, and then drinks the champagne. Despite the antidote, he begins to appear woozy, comments that This is terribly strong shampoo, and then passes out.
- Bond has a glass of champagne in front of him during his baccarat duel with LeChiffre at the Casino Royale.
Other peoples drinks:
- When we first see LeChiffre, he and the women around him have glasses of champagne.
- During the bacarrat showdown, LeChiffre is again drinking champagne. A bottle in an ice bucket is nearby him.
- On board Dr. Noahs aircraft (which features an impressive bar with an aquarium), a servant wheels over a cart with a bottle of champagne in an ice bucket, announcing, Your rain-cooled Taittinger, sir. The Detainer later slips the mini-atomic bomb pill in Dr. Noahs glass, and then toasts To your future. Dr. Noah (also known as Jimmy Bond) replies Ill drink to that. After he drinks, he looks at his glass and reflects My very special champagne. The Detainer reveals With your very special pill in it.
- The casino bar features prominently in the final fight scene.
Product placement: Taittinger champagne. Casino Royale is the only James Bond film to mention the brand by name.
By the book: Based on Casino Royale (1953).
- In the film, Bond drinks champagne as he plays baccarat. In the novel, he drinks champagne after defeating Le Chiffre (an unknown benefactor has sent him a half-bottle of bubbly).
Total: Five. At least two glasses of scotch whisky, at least two glasses of champagne, and a martini.
