“The Governor swallowed the last of his whisky. The ice made a hollow rattle as he put the glass softly down.”

Published:

  • Cosmopolitan, May, 1959.
  • Part of For Your Eyes Only, 1960.

Overview: In this anecdotal short story, the Governor of the Bahamas tells Bond a tale of love gone wrong. Fleming wrote the story in the style of his friend Somerset Maugham.

What does Bond drink?

  • There is a drink table with coffee and liqueurs in the drawing room. As the Governor is about to begin his story, Bond asks if he can have some more brandy, and pours himself an inch. As 007 listens to the Governor, he sips his drink.
  • The Governor pauses halfway through the tale, and pours whiskies and sodas for Bond and himself.

Total: Two. A brandy and a whisky and soda.
